Connecting to Special Places in the Heart

Aytan’s recreational therapy takes a holistic approach that combines physical, psycho-social, and cognitive aspects, particularly important in aging populations. Aytan involves them in innovative, specially designed programs that encourage communication, problem solving, and social interaction.

Whether seniors live in a residential facility or at home, take care of themselves, need assistance, or are part of the growing Alzheimer’s population, Aytan’s rich, engaging programs speak to their individual needs, as well as their group’s collective interests. By discovering what matters to them most, as a group and as individuals, Aytan’s activities weave memories and interests into rich tapestries of self-discovery.

Arnold

At 93 years young, Arnold, an assisted living resident, was razor-sharp but withdrawn, rarely participating in social activities. Previous programs did not appeal to him, and other residents had no idea how knowledgeable and fascinating he was. As Aytan gradually gained Arnold’s trust, he engaged him with a series of programs that tapped into a rich mother lode of memories and interests: American Chronicles (focusing on Arnold’s deep love of history), Trivia (highlighting Arnold’s steel-trap memory) and Hollywood Magic (reflecting Arnold’s passionate love for the silver screen). Today, Arnold has evolved into one of the group’s most inspiring social forces.

Harvey and Harlene

An elderly loving couple from San Francisco had raised four children and now faced serious health challenges. Harvey’s stroke took him in and out of hospitals, while Harlene’s debilitating eye condition made it difficult for her to read or watch television. Finding their former recreation therapist unsupportive, they enrolled in Aytan’s football roundtable series and developed an instant rapport with him. Harvey trusted Aytan and, despite a speech impediment, grew to express himself, both verbally and emotionally. Harlene also began to relish her role as the only woman in the group. They ended up becoming one of the program’s mainstays and encouraging other residents to participate more fully and frequently. As a result of their passionate involvement in the group, Harvey and Harlene’s health improved and both discovered renewed joy in their lives.
